York Museum Gardens Feature Nominated For The Press People’s Award in the York Design Awards 2017

5 June 2017

A geological mosaic map in the York Museum Gardens has been shortlisted for The Press People’s Award in the York Design Awards 2017.

Of the 33 schemes that have entered this year’s York Design Awards, 32 have put themselves forward for The Press People’s Award. This is the only award to be voted for by the public.

Situated in the shadows of St Mary’s Abbey ruins in the York Museum Gardens, the walk-on mosaic map was commissioned jointly by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and York Museums Trust in 2015.

It represents the Yorkshire part of William Smith’s famous geological map of 1815, which was the first ever geological map created of a whole country.

The mosaic was designed and created by artist Janette Ireland who used fossils, pebbles, and even discarded stone from York Minster to represent the ideas which Smith was demonstrating in his map.

The nomination comes a year after York Art Gallery were announced as winners of the Public and Community Large category, as well as winning the special Lord Mayor’s Award 2016.

Voting for The Press People’s Award closes on Wednesday June 7th 2017. Please click here for more information and to vote.
