Explore our Roman galleries by completing two discovery challenges. These will give pupils an insight into York’s connections to the wider Roman Empire and the beliefs and fashions that the Romans brought to Britain.

Get hands-on with real Roman artefacts using one of our Roman Object Boxes:

  • A Legionary’s Life: this box contains objects that will give pupils an insight into what it was like to serve as a Roman soldier in York.
  • Exploring Eboracum: this box contains objects which provide evidence of what civilian life was like in Roman York.

Learn through play by completing one of the following activities:

  • Terni Lapelli: pupils will get an insight into popular pastimes by learning how to play a Roman board game.
  • Marching with the legions: armed with a replica gladius and scutum, pupils will re-enact legionary battle tactics and find out what made the Roman army such a feared fighting machine.
