Of Locks and Socks: Aspects of Everyday Life in Viking Towns

Date: Thursday 12 October 2017, 6:30 pm - 8:15 pm
Venue: Yorkshire Museum

A lecture by Dr. Steve Ashby (Senior Lecturer, University of York).

The Viking Age can often appear as a world of swords and spears, silver and sorcery. Archaeological excavations, not least at York’s Coppergate and Hungate, have provided a different perspective on the period, revealing the ‘everyday’ world experienced by the inhabitants of Viking towns. A key question for those who study the Viking Age is how we resolve this tension between the familiar and the alien.

In this lecture, we will use recent research on archaeological objects to sketch out the lifeways of some of the people that populated the towns of Viking-Age England.
