Discover: Viking North – Workshop pilots  

Voyage into the past with our Discover: Viking North workshop! In this session pupils will explore the museum and handle real objects from our collections to uncover the lives of Viking warriors, traders, craftsmen and explorers throughout the North of England. Afterwards, pupils will learn the rules to a popular Viking board game inspired by hand-made gaming pieces discovered at the Viking Army Camp.   

This workshop is being developed to accompany the Yorkshire Museum’s upcoming Viking North exhibition.   

We are inviting schools to test our ideas for this session in five pilot workshops which we will be running between Monday 22 September and Friday 17 October 2025.

Maximum group size of 34 pupils per workshop.  

Session fees 

There is no charge for this pilot workshop. Participating groups will also receive free entry to the Yorkshire Museum if they wish to make a self-guided visit after their session. 

What to expect 

In this session, your pupils will:  

• Explore our Viking North exhibition by completing two discovery challenges. These will give pupils an insight into York’s connections with the wider Viking world, as well as what everyday life in the North of England was like under Viking rule.  

• Get hands-on with real Viking artefacts using one of our Viking object boxes.  

• Learn through play by trying out a popular Viking board game.  

Our Discover: Viking North workshop is led by an expert member of our Learning Team.

Cancellation policy  

If you need to cancel your workshop booking, then please give us as much notice as possible so that we can offer your slot to another group.  

If a booking is cancelled less than one week before your visit date, then your school will be charged a cancellation fee amounting to 50% of the visit fee. 

If a booking is cancelled less than 24 hours before your visit date, then you school will be charged a cancellation fee amounting to 100% of the visit fee.
