Want to find out more about the collections at York Museums Trust? Our knowledgeable curators regularly give talks that provide further insight into our exhibitions, aretfacts, and specialist areas of interest.

Lunchtime Talks – 12.30pm to 1pm

Our lunchtime talks are ideal for gaining an insight into some of our most interesting artefacts from our archaeology and natural science collections. Talks take place Tuesdays 12.30-1pm and are FREE with admission. There’s no need to book.

Extended Talks – 2-3pm

Our extended curator’s talks offer the opportunity to learn more about our exhibitions and collections in greater depth. Talks take place Thursdays 2-3pm and are priced at £10 per person. Please make sure to book ahead on our Eventbrite page here.

  • 11 May – William Buckland and the Hyenas of Yorkshire Come and find out the story of the founding of the Yorkshire Museum collections, with a chance to see some up close. Hear about the tropical creatures that used to roam Yorkshire, and one man’s odd choice of pet. Click here to book.
  • 15 June – Viking: Rediscover the Legend – The Vikings are Coming Join us for an introduction to the new Viking exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum. This immersive one hour talk from the Curator of Archaeology, Natalie Buy, will take you through the early years of the Viking invasions. Enjoy the opportunity to handle artefacts as you learn what drove the Norsemen to invade Anglo-Saxon Eoforwic and ultimately, how this led to the formation of Britain. Click here to book.
  • 20 July – Yorkshire’s Jurassic World Get up close to some of the Yorkshire Museum’s star Jurassic specimens, which help us paint a picture of an ancient world. See some new acquisitions, and get a sneak preview of our exhibition opening 2018. Click here to book.
  • 10 August – Viking: Rediscover the Legend – How the Vikings Changed Britain In the second talk of our Viking series, learn more about the part the Viking culture played in shaping and influencing Britain. Through object handling and curatorial discussion, discover the new designs, ideas and craftsmanship that arrived with the Vikings as well as ideas of governing the country. Click here to book.
  • 21 September – Viking: Rediscover the Legend – Legend of the Vikings Join us for the third in our series of Viking talks as we join the Curator of Archaeology, Natalie Buy to learn more about the turbulent Viking times in York.
